Has Anyone Had Their Tailbone Removed? (Coccyxectomy?)

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm planning on having my tailbone removed soon, but I'd feel better if I could get some feedback from someone who has had it done or from someone who can somehow relate to the pain I'm having. This is the history of the problem:

I have had tailbone pain for 20-25 years. At first, I didn't know why it hurt, and I was actually told by a doctor at some point that it may have had something to do with a lumbar laminectomy (large scar; wasn't allowed to sit for nearly 2 months; still have low back… read more

I am having severe back pain and my neurosurgeon thinks it's my tail bone. I had surgery at L4 and L5 six years ago for a disk that herniated and calcified and then broke off and was pressing against my spinal cord. I had never heard of removing the tailbone until my neurosurgeon told me that he has remove ten with success but I worry about how it would affect pelvic floor muscles because I have a bladder disease that can be worsened by pelvic floor dysfunction. I am interested in hearing from people that have had surgery to remove their tailbone.

I googled tailbone removal or coccyx, it doesn't sound to pleasant . I've had pain in my tailbone for 40 odd yrs , sometimes after sitting when I get up the pain in my coccyx floors me , after reading about it the removal process & the harsh healing time I'd think long and hard about having it removed. Good luck.

I have a high interest regarding this sugergy you have mentioned. I am a 50 yr old female who has experienced tailbone pain for 35years now but its risen in severity over last 15 years. Due to chronic pain with degenerative disc disease I”ve had many an Xray but it wasnt until a nuerologist sent me for a specific MRI that the cause was found- a confirmed severe Coccyx break (That 35 yr old injury ~ I could not sit for 3 days and even then leaned over to one side for months afterwards i simply had falling backwards from a bar stool onto a ceramic tiled kitchen floor) Not only did it show a previous break, it healed the opposite way- tailbones curve inwards and mine healed curving outwards. I rarely sit upright when im at home.... I just dont put myself through that agony- besides my tailbone region hurts enough just lying down! So.... Please keep me informed on your journey. I already plan
on taking this information you have given to my pain doctor— i need relief!! Thanks

Wow, this is an intense and critical issue.... I don't have any advice, but it certainly seems like connecting with someone who is in your age range and had it done might be a really good idea, or someone who had it done when they were generally in your age range. You would want to find out what can you expect down the road -- how will your body support the removal of your tailbone one year, five years from now, etc.
