Sleep and Chronic Pain

Posted on February 23, 2018

Do you have trouble sleeping when your body hurts from head to toe? You’re not alone. Members of MyChronicPainTeam share tips and advice for getting the shut-eye their bodies desperately need. Some rely on prescription sleep aids and muscle relaxers. “Tizanadine (Zanaflex) saved my life, my sanity, and my family relationships,” said one man. “It enabled me to get REM sleep after 20 years.”

Others swear by the sleep-inducing properties of cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabis, where legally available. Members who can’t lie flat have swapped the bed for a recliner: “That’s where I spend plenty of nights and get more beneficial sleep!” said one man.

Another uses a wedge in bed “that feels like a recliner” and “a body pillow under my legs.” Music helps many drift off to sleep. One man created a 10-hour playlist of relaxing sounds to help him sleep. Other members have success with the following alternative remedies and supplements before bedtime:

  • Lavender essential oils
  • Tiger Balm
  • Epsom salts baths
  • Chamomile or Sleepytime tea with honey
  • Meditation apps
  • Melatonin
  • L-Tryptophan

When pain robs your rest, it’s helpful to connect with others who are having the same experience and can provide support and suggestions. Always check with your doctor before taking any new over-the-counter supplements or remedies.

On MyChronicPainTeam, the social network and online support group for those living with chronic pain, members talk about a range of personal experiences and struggles. Sleep is one of the top 10 topics most discussed.
