Members shared deeply mixed experiences with spinal fusion for lower back issues, with outcomes ranging from life-saving relief to permanent disability, emphasizing the critical importance of thoroughly researching surgeons, seeking multiple opinions, and understanding all potential risks before proceeding. Several members described complications including failed pain relief, worsening mobility requiring walkers instead of canes, adjacent disk deterioration above the fusion site, and nerve damage from surgical errors, with one member noting that inadequate post-surgical physical therapy likely contributed to their decline. A recurring theme was cautious advice to explore all alternatives first, as many found better results from nerve stimulators, medications like Gabapentin and Cymbalta, TENS units, and cannabis rather than repeat surgeries that doctors warned might have only a 70% success rate.

There are definitely worse things so that's not so bad.

I'm not ashamed to say that when my pain gets really bad I smoke.

I was told by a Dr that Gabapentin is better than Lyrica for nerve pain. I'm currently taking 800mg 3 times a day. It helps. I tested that theory by stopping it thinking it wasn't helping. I was wrong. I'm also taking Cymbalta 60mg per day. I've never felt that Cymbalta relieved my pain. It just brought me up mentally, so that I could deal with the pain and not get depressed so much about things. Wellbutrin is a different anti-depressant you might want to ask your Dr about. My TENS unit helps, and I'm sorry (not trying peddle pot) but cannabis is a very effective pain reliever. Hope that helps.

Sorry to hear that. I will definitely do my research if I choose to go that route.

Yes and now I am permanently disabled due to a medical mistake during the surgery. I would say know all about your surgeon and ask lots of questions when they tell you what could possibly go wrong. Especially about Nerve Damage.
