Has Anyone Been Refused Joint Replacements Because Of Significant Nerve Pain To The Joint?
I was diagnosed with requiring both knees needed to be replaced. My consultant however told me that he wouldn't be able to do the operations as it was clear that I was experiencing nerve pain from my spine to both knees. He had two previous patients with similar conditions who had their knee joint replaced and both returned to see the consultant and begged him to amputate their leg as their nerve pain was so great after the surgery. @A MyChronicPainTeam Member The trouble is each person is slightly different & you can only go on your own experience I had a hip replace 11 years ago but I had had to wait nearly a year before they could do it by that time the pain was such not only could I not walk more that a few steps without pain I could no longer lie down either. So when they did the op & laid me flat after the op I was in torture because the arthritis in my back had progressed & I could not move I cannot describe the pain I thought I would go mental. Now I was lucky some exercise (only a little & very slowly at first) released the nerves & it took time but it did settle. Recovery was twice as long as expected but if you have nerves in your back that are already in trouble I can see where they are coming from. He wouldn't consider operating under an epidural? with physio before that wears off to keep the nerves from being trapped??
@A MyChronicPainTeam Member I have not had that particular situation. About 12 years or some where around then I was told that I needed to have both knees replaced. At the same time we had moved out of that state and to a neighboring one. Ken was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and his health became a priority. The knees were forgotten for a couple of years. Ken pulled through using radiation and has be cancer free for ten years now.
A few years ago I was experiencing the same problems that had led me to speak with my then ortho surgeon. This time I spoke with my Rhuematologist who did xrays and told me that it would be foolish to have that surgery because I had tons of bone left. My only problem was arthritis and some damaged cartlidge. Not the conditions thar warrented surgery. So I listened to him rather then pay for some doc's vacation. We have decided that when I can no longer walk, that will be the time to act. Hugs Barb
I have had both knees replaced. I was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis last year. The pain from my Stenosis, made me think my left knee had failed. I had a Laminectomy and fusion, and my knee no longer hurts. It felt like a vice grip was tightening on my knee. All the pain was from my spine. Surgery was a great success . Wish I would have had it sooner. Trust me, you would rather have back surgery, than knee surgery. Knee surgery was hell for me.
@A MyChronicPainTeam Member I was reading something else that reminded me of this. I think I assumed it was coming from your back because that is where the nerves leave the spinal column, but did he say what was causing the nerve pain? because I would have expected you to have nerve pain elsewhere as well, unless it is being trapped in the knee in which case why cant he move it to the side while he operates. Mind you I am making it sound easy but that is incredibly difficult to do. A second opinion wouldn't go amiss at the very least maybe someone else would explain what the actual problem is better.
