Stim Router/Spina Bifida/Pain Management

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've been seeing a pain doctor for pain in my lower back and hips for a while now; I see him once a month. The last few appointments (yesterday being the most recent), the doctor has been encouraging me to get a trial placement of a spinal cord stimulation unit or a "stim router". I'm hesitant for two reasons: 1. Every time I've had a procedure on my spine and/or hips, I get an infection. In fact, I'm 95% sure that my pain is related to an infection in my spine and hip that I've been dealing… read more

As a 19year spinal cord stimulator patient, I don’t think you are a good candidate. How do you tolerate a tens unit? If you can not handle a external tens unit you will not tolerate the internal spinal cord stimulator. I would instead ask for a pain pump. Still a small invasive procedure, but if you go on antibiotics before the surgery, and a drip of antibiotics during the surgery and post procedure antibiotics, you should beat the infection you generally get.

I pray this answer isn’t too late!

I don't know about the spinach bifida, but I have a problem with surgery in the fact that I always get infection in the cut. In my case it may be a problem with the stitches, but when I look back at every time in my life, I've had ditches, they get infected to the point they have to take the stitches out and try to tape it back together. I end up with large scars. Then I also end up on antibiotics. The only time I didn't have that was the last time when I had a lump removed from my foot and the Dr put me on antibiotics before the surgery. It might be something to talk to the Dr about.
