A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭
Los Angeles, CA

I was curious if anyone knew or had success with a dentist in the LA area who treated TMJ? Thank you!

Thanks very much! I appreciate all this helpful info and advice. And yes indeed I have had some relief recently with acupuncture and chiropractic work. All my best.

I almost hate to speak up. Please don't throw tomatoes! :)

In the medical field, they are taught to help us with our symptoms. Thank goodness! In the alternative world, they are taught to deal with the orgin of the issue. TMJ can be caused by many things, so I suggest looking up each modality and TMJ. Such as:
Acupuncture and TMJ. Chiropractic and TMJ. etc.. It's fine to look at someone's story, but research-based is best. Think outside the box. I've noticed more pain docs are asking for alternative modalities first before something serious is done. My team has supported everything I've done or tried, as they know in reality, all they can do is numb me. This does not mean surgery or more intrusive medicine isn't necessary. It means - starting at the least invasive and moving up. I'm listening to a conference of professionals who are finding out, our trauma (don't we all have trauma from pain?) may keep us from complete healing. Don't take this out of context, but we know trauma can cause disease to become worse. You have the option of discussing any treatment with the professional you choose to visit. If it sounds good, try a treatment. You will never see an overnight cure. Your body is designed to heal, but it takes time. If we have been injured, then we probably won't be 100%. But we might improve enough to be satisfied. We might laugh at YouTube, but sometimes it gives us enough info to start down a different fork in the road.

Are you counseled about diet? Are you given options to try? Or is it more medications and told: "that's it"? After many years of talking to doctors, you'd be surprised how many do believe in what we never think of. But they are held back unless YOU the patient, bring it up. If you are told - "that will kill you", then consider "will it".

If you listen to commercials, the list that is said quickly last almost as long as the commercial. This is something else to look up... What is the risk of using XYZ and your health problem?

Sometimes, it pays to ask "do you have Plan B"? This allows them legally to suggest something they might not suggest if not asked.

I can't go into this too deep, as I don't have permission and it's a whole 'nother subject. Look things up...but try going outside of your comfort zone and see what is said. Validate by research.

Good luck.

Very good! If I'm not intruding, did the chiro mention anything about C1/C2? And, have you had a sleep study? While these are nothing a like - I was curious about the Chiro, but also my neuro helped with issues from TMJ. I've noticed lately I'm clenching my teeth. Stress. Do you have stress? lol. Never mind! 🤣
