Should I Undergo Surgery For Re-replacement Of My 12 Yr Old Knee Replacement?

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭
Cincinnati, OH

I had my knee replaced when I was very young. The surgeon told me it would last 10 years. The first surgery was very difficult on me. It's been 12 years. It hurts. But not to the point I'm in great suffering. Should I get my knee re-replaced b4 i get any older? Or should I just tough it out not undergoing another surgery, post surgery, and rough physical therapy?

Implants are glued in there not drove into the bone like they used to so it's a quicker recovery time instead of the long time that it took the other implants to heal so it might be a little different in your recovery this time and it was just saying so up to you I thought I'd put that out there for you guys

If the current replacement isn't causing any damage, I'd hold off for a while. However, if the metal parts are causing more bone damage, I would probably get it done sooner than later. I know physical therapy can be painful, I've gone through post surgery pt a few times with back and neck surgeries, but it's really worth the pain in the long run. You are really the only one that can make the decision for you, but keep in mind we heal slower the older we get (unless you are in perfect health)

Yes! Get advice from your Doc. Also current knee replacement surgery has come a long way! My last replacement was awesome! No staples, small incision, good pain meds and PT - I was walking without a cane after about a week and a half!! I had an unbelievable surgeon though...

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member I agree with @A MyChronicPainTeam Member that you are the only one that can decide if the prosthetic is causing you damage and needs replacement and is it worth the surgery/pt to get back to where you are physically. I've had knee replacement and revision over 10 years ago. Mine was replaced and doing beautifully, 6 months later an accident at 20mph and I was rear ended and my knee struck the dash. It broke the prosthetic loose. It never showed on any test. Not xray, ct scan or MRI. Finally the dr relented and preformed the surgery. The prosthetic was no longer attached at the top and only one small area on the bottom. The revision was a sturdier joint but the pr was different. No machine that flexes the joint and I think it's why it didnt heal like the first surgery. I cant extend my leg straight and it remains painful 14 years later. I doubt I will have that joint revised again. I'm 60 and I dont think it is worth it as things are now for me. In 6 month that might change. Whatever you decide you will get support from your fellow warriors here. Best of luck. I pray the knee lasts as long as you wish.

I had my right hip replaced September 2018. I'm 57 years old. Initially I went through hip joint injections 4 times in one year but the last one didn't work at all. I was told by my surgeon my only option was replacement. They did not want to rx pain meds. Woke up from surgery with a painful KNEE! Since then, I had to fight to get my doc to order imaging. Found out I have bone marrow edema in my knee. This really hurts and has been going on since hip surgery. I have pain going down from my low back and around my thigh to my knee and lower leg. My doc keeps saying "the hip looks good." Meantime he refuses to give any pain meds. I walk with a cane bc of pain and balance. He referred me to pain mgmt so I go this Wed. I also have Fibro which has really kicked in. I haven't been able to work for past 6 months so I applied for SSDI. I hope he can help me - this pain is exhausting. My quality of life is really suffering. My husband and I used to hike for miles, I miss that! The only thing that makes me able to function at all is oxycodone. The stigma is so bad nowadays, I'm afraid he won't believe me and judge me as a drug seeker, which I am not! Just looking for help. Thanks for letting me vent!!
