How To Maintain Cat Litter Box With Fatigue And A Bad Back?

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question šŸ’
Blue Springs, MO

I have chronic back pain along with fun side effects like fatigue and depression. Keeping a clean cat box is darn near impossible, since box is downstairs, so "out of sight and out of mind." The basement has essentially turned into a cat latrine, thanks to my lack of attention. I know this isn't fair to my two Siamese, although they've never soiled the upstairs.

How can I simplify the cat box situation? Anyone using any creative cat litter solutions? The problem is the bending and lifting Iā€¦ read more

Hi @A MyChronicPainTeam Member My cat uses a covered litter box that I have placed it up on a bench that's at the correct height for me. I buy clay clumping kitty litter and use a sifter-type scoop. The spare kitty litter is stored up on the bench too. When it's time to clean it out, I undo the clips on the sides and lift off the top. Then scoop out the solids, refill with new litter and then put the top back on. With Siamese cats (who are often rather fussy) it might be necessary to have separate litter boxes. Hope this helps. The Clumping litter that I buy comes in 2.5kg or 10kg bags and has good odour control (better than the non-clumping kitty litter). I, too, suffer from fatigue and constant severe pain. I try to choose my best time, usually in the morning, to change the litter, although I don't usually try to be hauling around the bags and clean out the litter tray at the same time.

My heart surely goes outnto you because I, along with so many others, understand the daily struggles of what would appear to be basic living. It takes strength, resilience, courage, falling, crying, and getting back up.

Is there any way that you could have a cart on wheels made so the lifting is minimal for carrying the litter into the house? Any neighbors, family, teens close to you that may do it for a very minimal charge?

As far as the cat box goes, I saw an ad a while ago that there's a box that you put a stack of liners in...each liner acts as a sifter that you would just lift out...the litter falls back into the box but feces and urine is too large to go through the little holes. After you use the last liner it's usually time to change the whole box and once you do you just place a new stack of liners, add the litter on top of the liners and repeat the process. It would make it easier for you to manage.

Wow it has to smell really bad down there! But I totally understand how it got that way. Is there any way you can bring the litter box upstairs and place it on a sturdy table. This way you don't have to go up & down the stairs and you don't have to bend over to clean the box. Hope is helps. Let me know how how it works out.

My cat only will go in the litter box 3x a week I feed her 2x a day, I do have my housekeeper help me with the box and she doesn't have to lift and I don't have to bend over I do understand that most people don't have that luxury but I got her through the state so I don't have to pay her and she helps with the cat care. good luck
