Getting On Disability

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭
Richmond, VA

How do I know if I should apply for disability? Is it really going to help that much if I've primarily been self employed the last 17 years? The pain is pretty intense 2-3 days a week now.

If you're at the point where you really can't work enough to support yourself then you should apply. Contrary to what most have said - if you keep your records if when it started and what you tried to keep working I would suggest you apply on your own first. It took me a little over a yr before mine was approved but it usually doesn't take that long now since unless you don't have enough supporting documentation. If you hire a lawyer. When you do get approved the lawyer will get 1/3 if your back pay. They'll pay up to 6 months in back pay so my first check was $13000. but I had no income for 9 mos. I initally applied in April got my check the end if the following June and my in employment ran out the end of Sept. If I had an attorney he would have gotten a third of that check. It wasn't that hard to apply on my own. It's a notch trying to pay rent and utilities and the very basics unless you we're making over $50,000 yr. I was making $42,000 and I get $1849 a month, rent in low income housing is $788 for 1 bdrm. Then they take out for Medicare B abt $150, - I barely break even and since I hit the Medicare drug coverage donut hole I don't have enough to cover everything.

I would definitely get a lawyer, I just heard on the news that there's a huge back log of people waiting. I also provided my lawyer with all my medical records to help the process along. I will be praying for you

I filed for my disability over a year ago. And just got to the stage of waiting for a hearing with a judge. Their letter told me it can take 18 to 24 months just to get the hearing date and then another 3 months to get the verdict. This is unreal to me. I have two doctors telling me that I'm permanently disabled but yet I am having troubles getting social security to see that I am disabled. They have had me jump through all kinds of hoops. I have a lawyer on my case and have had since the first denial. Get a lawyer on board as soon as possible. KEEP COPIES OF ALL MEDICAL RECORDS AND TEST RESULTS. You will need them.

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member Mam, I don't like to pry, but Im telling you, You have to get some cash job that. You have to show NO INCOME FOR A COMPLETE year, If you even have a dime , they will deny you. TRUST ME I KNOW, I had medical records, mris, xrays, doc reports, the disability attorney looked and wondered how I got there even, You can do it your self, but if you have a dis lawyer that will work on contignwency, They don't get paid unless you do.... I felt the same way, Find a way to bring in cash, PHONE JOBS, RENT A ROOM IN YOUYR HOUSE, ... Good luck keep in touch,
