Referral To Pain Clinic Refused

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭
Adelaide, AU

Hi everyone, this is Craig Pater. As mentioned in a previous post, I have serious issues with pain control. As my pain levels are very severe, I spoke to my GP about that this morning (Australian time). He refused to refer me to a pain control clinic. The "reason" given was the 18 month waiting period, and because pain clinics mainly change pain medication. And allegedly, I hadn't tried alternative strategies or options to control the pain. Obviously one of the treatment options in a pain clinic… read more

For my longest 13 year chronic pain I’ve been on @OxyContin but had to reduce it due to the side effects. Now the dosage is so low that it hardly says “hello”! Strong anti inflammatories didn’t work for any of the multiple conditions my body has, but when some pain shouts and screams then I’ve reverted to high dosages of ibuprofen (with my doctor’s and specialist’s approval) which actually does sometimes help; though I don’t take it continuously. Otherwise it’s grin - if possible - and bear it. Difficult not to moan and groan.
Oh yes, steroid injections helped for too short a time but only after a ghastly initial phase of kicking in. Was it worth it? I didn’t think,so. Many years ago they tried it but the same happened.

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member It's been a few months Craig that you posted your question, Have you had any luck with any of the suggestions? I'd be interested to know. Up here in Canada marijuana is legal and I have been on the pill form, NABILONE, for a few years. I can't say it's the answer but it does allow me to function better than without it. For some strange reason the Pharmeceutical companies are running low of the product so it's like running from pharmacy to pharmacy hoping you get enough for a month. Right now I take 3 mg. in the AM and 3 mg at the PM. Tylenol 3 for some strange reason has been a go to pill for me for breakthrough pain. It's the only thing that will budge a migraine. Please do not listen to this MD you have. It took me 18 months to get in only because my GP was dragging her butt on it. Craig, it's worth the wait, trust me on this. The compassion and knowledge these doctors and nurses have are in no comparison to a GP. My main doc at the pain clinic said he has something else to try if this shortage of Nabilone persists. I'll let you know what it is when I find out. Gentle hugs!!

I got in trouble at my pain clinics b/c I smoked a little weed, which does help immensely. Not a big user but if I don't have anything and someone offers, I took 'em up on it. Not trying to push it on anyone at all, just being honest!

I definitely agree with you, there are similar issues in South Australia, which is a state in Australia. Due to the abuse and misuse of prescription painkillers, it's harder for people who need them to have them prescribed.

Sometimes due to problems not caused by us some people's nerves are more sensitive to pain than others. Tramadol will NOT do better than oxycodone. However the government, due to the opiod epidemic is making it harder and harder for doctors to prescribe drugs such as oxycodone as they do not want us to become addicts. However opiod addicts get help because they want to keep them from overdosing. The overdose rate is going down here only because of Narcan. We live in a high drug trafficking area which is right at the tri-state and interstate easy access area. Huge amounts of money are being spent in our area to help them while other help for us and our veterans go by the wayside. It is awful that the epidemic is restricting us from getting our medications we need.
