Does Anyone Ever Have Problems Swallowing Food?

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

When eating on occasion I am unable to swallow. Things can be just fine and I take a bite and try swallow and the food gets stuck. It has become scary at times because when it's lodged I'm not able to breath and I'm choking. It's only been going on for about a month so I was just curious if this has happened to anyone else.💜

Members shared their frightening experiences with difficulty swallowing food, a problem that can leave them choking and unable to breathe, with many describing incidents involving bread, meat, or dry foods that suddenly get stuck without warning. Several members offered practical guidance including getting evaluated by a gastroenterologist for conditions like GERD, esophageal narrowing, or scar tissue, having tests such as barium swallow studies or endoscopies, taking smaller bites with liquids nearby, and keeping fizzy drinks on hand as carbonation can help expand the esophagus. A recurring theme was the scary and isolating nature of these episodes, the frustration with people who don't understand the seriousness of choking, and the connection many noticed between stress, dry mouth from medications, and worsening swallowing difficulties.

Yes, I have. Was especially bad under stressful situations. Since my life has calmed down and I got rid of the stressor, doesn't happen often and not as bad. Had a swallow study once, where they gave me increasingling thinner liquids, even though I told them I did not have a problem with liquids. Smaller bites, keep liquid by your plate so you can moisten your mouth and throat. As we know meds dry our mouths. Hope that helps.

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member, interesting you should mention difficulty speaking with stress. I was actually losing my voice. First squeaky high pitched, like Disney's Pluto. Then my voice would be gone for a short time. Since my stressor it's gone, haven't had this problem. It's that what you meant about diff talking, & breathing?

In answer to your question Sherry l sometimes choke when eating bread usually a sandwich, and yes it is very scary when you can't get your breath. I have been like this since l had a few mini strokes so whether that has something to do with it l don't know. Now l try to eat mindfully and sat down at the table. I think it helps. Take care, Gwynnie xx
